The Port Everglades Association, Inc. was incorporated in 1979 with six founding members:
Claude Collins, Strachan Shipping; Jean Fitzgerald, Tracor Marine; Hans Hvide, Hvide Shipping; William Jackson, Port Everglades Pilots Association; Harry Santos, Harry Santos & Company; and Carl Thorsen, Eller & Company. Together these founders sparked the idea of the port business community teaming up to advance the progess and development of Broward County's seaport.
Today, the Port Everglades Association serves as a bridge between public and private interests to facilitate the Port's achievement of its rightful place in the first rank of America's ports of ocean commerce. Consisting of port tenants, contractors, vendors and other members of the Port Everglades business community, the Association conducts a monthly luncheon general membership meeting on the first Friday of each month with presentations by featured speakers on current port-related issues and events.
Pursuant to its mission, the Association has established four standing committees with definitive purposes and objectives as follows:
Planning & Development Committee
To maintain a pro-active and positive relationship with Port Everglades' staff in order to stay abreast of tactical and strategic plans so as to influence, when possible, the planning and development decisions of the Port to benefit the Association membership and the community at-large.
Governmental Relations Committee
To enhance cooperation between the Association and federal, state, county and local government representatives.
Marketing & Public Relations Committee
To develop programs, strategies and activities to enhance the Association's image and influence with the general public and to communicate the importance of the port and Association members as the key economic engine of the entire area.
Membership & Fundraising
To maintain current membership and expand the membership into other core areas of the port while serving the special needs of existing and potential members.
